Gig Buddies

Gig Buddies, spearheaded by the charity Stay Up Late, tackles social isolation within the learning disability community by pairing individuals with volunteer "Gig Buddies". These pairings share similar interests, enabling them to attend mainstream cultural and social events together.

Set up in response to the restrictive care rotas that often prevent people with learning disabilities from enjoying evening activities and staying out late, Gig Buddies empowers individuals to lead more independent and fulfilling social lives.

This initiative has a profound effect on the SEND community by fostering genuine friendships, increasing social inclusion, building confidence, and challenging the often low expectations placed upon them. Ultimately promoting their right to enjoy ordinary life experiences and combatting loneliness.

The "Stay Up Late" campaign further advocates for flexible support systems that respect the choices and desires of people with learning disabilities regarding their social lives and bedtimes.

Amaze

Amaze Brighton is a charity dedicated to supporting families with children and young people who have special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

Established in 1997 by a group of parents navigating the complexities of raising children with SEND, Amaze aims to provide a guiding hand through the often confusing "maze" of services and support.

They offer a comprehensive range of services, including the SENDIASS (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Information, Advice and Support Service) advice line, providing impartial and confidential information on education, health, social care, and benefits.

Amaze also runs peer support groups for young people through their Amazing Futures project, offers support with disability benefit claims, and facilitates the Compass Card, a leisure discount card for young people with significant SEND.

By empowering families and young people with knowledge, connections, and practical support, Amaze plays a crucial role in fostering resilience, ensuring voices are heard, and promoting positive outcomes within the SEND community in Brighton and beyond.
